Monty the monkey had a plan to buy manners instead of learning. Will he succeed?
Monty is a rude monkey.
He does not greet his teachers when he sees them.
When he knocked onto Bonnie the bunny, he did not apologize.
He did not give way to an old man whom he met on the streets.
His mother got upset with him. She chided him, “Could you learn some manners?”
“Learning manners is too troublesome. Buying them is more convenient.” Monty replied. “Give me some money, mum. I’m going to buy manners.”
Mother monkey laughed, thought about it carefully, and decided to give Monty some money. Monty took the money and ran happily towards the street.
He came to the first store, and shouted, “Hey, do you sell manners here?”
No one answered.
Monty came to the second store and called out, “Hey, anyone sell manners here?”
Still, no one answered.
He went to the third, fourth, and fifth stores, and ran a total of thirty-three stores. However, he did not manage to get shop who sells manners.
There was only one last shop left.
This shop was owned by uncle sheep.
Uncle sheep is usually very kind to Monty. Monty respects him very much.
Monty thought, if Uncle sheep is willing to help, I will be able to buy manners.
When he stepped into the shop, Monty saw that Uncle sheep was busy, so he waited. “Uncle Sheep, do you have manners to sell?” Monty asked softly.
Uncle sheep smiled and said, “Silly boy, manners cannot be bought, only learned.”
Monty was disappointed. He did not manage to buy manners and walked home sadly.
When he reached home, he said sheepishly, “I’m sorry, Mom, I didn’t buy manners.”
Mother Monkey happily brought out the meal and said “You must be hungry, let’s eat!”
Monty was famished and took a big bite for his meal. He thought to himself, “My Mum is the best, I want to thank her!
“Thank you, Mom!” A very polite word flew out of Monty’s mouth.
Mother monkey was pleased and said, “Although you did not buy manners, but you learned it today.”
Monty smiled.
